One of the root causes of Christians not focusing on God comes from what the churches teach, or rather, what they do not teach. Each church seems to pull certain key verses of the Bible out, and build their doctrine around them. What they end up doing is only teaching part of the Bible - like a half truth. One of the doctrines taught by many churches is the "once saved, always saved" theory and a very similar one, "all you have to do is believe in Jesus." After all, if that is all there is too it, why do anything else? Another one is predestination. Again, if we have already been chosen, why do anything else? To further confuse the issue, churches have modeled themselves into the business and entertainment world instead of into Jesus. They elect officials, pay taxes, entertain themselves, and focus on other business things like any other business or group. What this tells the congregation is that we should be living in the world like everybody else. Of course, if the churches would repent of their sins, there would likely be a mass exodus of people from the pews, which would destroy their business.
